THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

– Education: For many years, there has been a notable increase in education of women globally but how has it upgraded women’s economic contributions? According to a UN report,
Studying, upskilling, and re-skilling throughout one’s life, notably to keep up with rapid technological and digital transformations affecting jobs, is vital for women’s and girls’ health and well-being, as well as income-generating opportunities and participation in the formal labor market. Over the last 50 years, increased educational attainment has accounted for over half of all economic development in OECD countries. However, for the vast majority of women, large educational advancements have not resulted in greater job opportunities.

– Women’s economic equality benefits business. Companies gain tremendously from improving women’s employment and leadership opportunities, which have been proven to improve organizational effectiveness and growth. Companies with three or more women in key management capacities are expected to do better overall.

Indeed, the role of women in economic development cannot be overemphasized. It is important to ensure that women go beyond getting their basic education to occupying roles in organizations to contribute the best quota to nation-building.
