Why do I need to set career goals?

what are your goals?Goal setting is helpful in any of area of life that we want to see growth and success. Having a goal you want to achieve means that you recognize the gap that is between your current state and your future state and have ways or plans to fill or close those gaps.

Career goals, like any other goal, requires certain key questions to ask and answer for you to clearly define what needs to be done to get to where you need to be.

Here are 3 reasons why you need to set goals for your career

  1. To enable you evaluate the current place you are – critically analyse where you are with your career. What is working, what isn’t working and why. (If you have a functional HR department, you can ask for a copy of your job performance review to help you in further analysis)
  2. To help you identify where you want to be – paint a picture of where you want to be by the evaluation and analysis you have done from point one.
  3. To aid you in setting practical steps to reach the place you want to be– hard-work is inevitable in getting to where you want to be. Identify the actions you need to carry out and how you need to activate and follow through those actions.

Goal setting must be realistic and implementable, achievable and have a time limit assigned to it. I suggest that you set career goals that you can easily measure after you achieve them.

I suggest reading books that can add a skill or enhance a skill that you already have that will benefit your career in the long run. Anything that supports your development is always a good one.

HEIR is happy to help you set those career goals and support you along the way in achieving them.

Well, what are you waiting for?
