The Reserved Seats Bill is created to give women fair representation in governance and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy. This piece of legislation will be positioned to increase the number of women in the National Assembly. The number of women in positions at this 10th Assembly is the lowest it has been over the legislative years.
Despite remarkable achievements by women across many sectors, positions of leadership through politics, for women in NASS, needs to be improved. Overall representation of women in governance has to be increased to position Nigeria as a Nation demonstrating inclusion, creating space for leadership that is unbiased and the full utilisation of resources for our country.
The Ten Benefits of the Reserved Seats Bill
- Women will be more visible in the upper and lower houses. This gives a near balance image and view than what we see today.
- Societal issues can be addressed from different experiences that women have making discussion to have a balanced view
- Nigeria will begin to participate in Global opportunities and not miss out because of the abysmal representation of women
- Women owned businesses contribute significantly to the GDP of Nigeria . When more women are in positions of leadership, the economy will perform better
- Grassroots women will become more empowered to run for offices through the reserved seats bill because more opportunities will be available
- Young women will see examples of women who occupy positions of leadership and be encouraged to join in. Young women will see a vision for the future for themselves to occupy roles either through elective or appointive positions
- Visibility of women will increase across the media, women will be speaking and engaging more frequently in media platforms and contributing to National dialogue. Girls can be inspired by the evolving of their mindset towards leadership because they see real time, that it is possible to lead.
- The men in NASS will be involved in making decisions that show parity and equity. Men will be involved more due to the ability of women to be inclusive on social issues. Boys will have a transformed mindset seeing more women leading and will re-engineer their mindset towards leadership and see that girls are also able to become leaders.
- The Nation will be utilising every member of the society rather than half of its population
- The country will experience exponential growth moving her from a developing state to a developed country
The Reserved Seats Bill is about equity, inclusiveness and progress. It has more reaching benefits than listed here and it has 16 years to reap the rewards and dividends therein. The National Hearing for the Reserved Seats Bill is scheduled for 22nd September, 2025. The voting by the House of Representatives to pass the bill is scheduled for October, 2025.
